QotD: Alert The Ministry Of Irony Edition...

Massad Ayoob on the Bloomberg AstroTurf protest group's choice of venues, which was in Veteran's Park, in front of the somber World War Memorial and across the lawn from the cenotaph:
How ironic that they would speak for diminution of gun owners’ civil rights in the shadow of a monument to those who died fighting for those rights…
They think that their imagined right to feel safe is worth stripping me of my right to defend myself. They're wrong.

Feelings should not trump rights, indeed.

In the old Soviet Union, at least according to Tom Clancy, there was a way around paralyzing party doctrine. If, say, a KGB agent had to violate Party doctrine to complete a mission, during his debriefing he could declare that the violation was necessary.

Not because he wasn't a loyal Party subject, oh my no, but because "objective external conditions" during his mission required him to sidestep an idiotic, illogical bit of communism or fail to complete his mission.

Those objective external conditions cropped up more and more in the 1980s, until the whole house of cards fell into a heap. And since the KGB guys were quite advanced at avoiding doctrinal Party compliance, the KGB guys were the best trained to take over Russia after the fall.
